Here's some overview information about the FCPS budget situation and impact over the past few years along with what FCPS is requesting from the county. Visit the FCPS website for the latest information and greater details about the FCPS FY 2012 budget.
FCPS situation
Over the past few years, FCPS has cut:
•Hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of positions
•Eliminated programs such as summer school
•Instituted testing and athletic fees
•Frozen teacher's pay
•And, increased class sizes while student enrollments grow by thousands
To maintain programs such as early foreign language and elementary band & strings which are often the first programs on the chopping block during tough times, we must continue to fight for education funding.
Fairfax County also needs to complete the implementation of full-day kindergarten in the remaining 37 schools without FDK and maintain quality teachers.
What is FCPS requesting?
FCPS is requesting a $42M transfer increase from the BOS, however, this amount is highly unlikely since it is not possible for the advertised tax rate to generate that much additional revenue. See FCPS website for FY 2012 budget details.
